For lakhs of Ex-Servicemen (ESM) and their families, the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) is more than just a benefit, it’s a lifeline. It helps cover the cost of medical treatment, medicines, hospital visits, and more. But when it comes to filing a claim online, many people find the process confusing and frustrating. The forms, steps, and technical terms can feel like trying to decode a complex military manual.
This guide is here to change that. We've broken down the online claim process into clear, simple steps so you know exactly what to do, from collecting the right documents to submitting your claim without errors. This article will help you get the medical reimbursements and check ECHS bill claim status, faster and without any hassle.
The Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) is designed to help retired Armed Forces personnel and their families get the medical care they need. Whether it’s a regular check-up or a hospital stay, ECHS gives access to treatment through its own clinics (called Polyclinics), military hospitals, and a large number of approved private hospitals across the country. It’s all about making sure veterans and their loved ones are looked after, no matter where they live.
First of all you need to access the Claim Submission Portal:
Go to the ECHS website: www.echs.gov.in
In the next step, you need to fill in the patient details and personal details, then click save & continue.
Now comes the Bill Details. Fill in all the correct details and save & continue.
Next, you are required to provide supporting documents like an ECHS card copy and NA Certificate. Upload them and save & continue.
At last, you need to click on the self declaration box, and download the contingent bill. This bill will be pre-filled, fill the details in the form and click submit.
Note: Once you submit your reimbursement claim online, don’t forget to submit the original documents to your polyclinic within 15 days.
Here is how you check the status of your ECHS medical claim status online:
Next, Login into the account using the 12-digit ECHS Card Number and registered mobile number. You will receive an OTP, enter it to login.
Once you're logged in, your dashboard will show the details of your submitted claim, including:
You can check the status of your ECHS medical claim status anytime to see how it’s progressing.
If you're an ECHS member, you can get your medical expenses refunded in many situations; like emergencies, treatments at government hospitals, or when medicines aren’t available at your polyclinic. Here is a list of types of claims you can make and how to submit them.
If you land in an emergency and are rushed to a private hospital, for a situation like a heart attack or accident, that isn’t tied up with ECHS, you don’t need to worry at all. You can still claim your reimbursement. Here how you can claim it:
Note: Your refund will be based on the approved government rates.
Going to a government or reputed public hospital (like AIIMS) is treated just like using an ECHS-approved hospital. Therefore, you can easily get your reimbursement. Here is how much you can claim:
If dialysis facilities aren’t available at a CGHS-approved center in your area, you can get the treatment once a month at any nearby hospital, even if it’s not officially tied to CGHS. Afterward, you can apply for a refund, and the government will reimburse you based on CGHS rates or the actual amount you spent, whichever is lower.
If the polyclinic doesn't have an ambulance available, and a medical doctor certifies that it's too risky for the patient to travel by any other means, then the cost of hiring an ambulance can be reimbursed, as long as the travel happens within the same city.
If a patient urgently needs a life-saving investigation that is not available at a service hospital or an empanelled facility, they can still get it done at a non-empanelled hospital, under certain conditions. Here’s how it works:
If the polyclinic sends you to a hospital in another city, ECHS will pay for your travel costs, including for a medical attendant if the doctor says it’s necessary.
ECHS will reimburse the cost of dental treatment, but only up to the rates approved by CGHS (Central Government Health Scheme). So, if your dental bill is higher than the CGHS rate, you'll have to pay the extra amount yourself.
Note: If you buy medicines on your own without getting the NA Certificate first, you won't be reimbursed. So always follow the proper steps to avoid losing money.
At first, the ECHS online claim process might feel a bit confusing, but once you understand the basics, it’s actually quite simple.
Whether you're claiming for medicines (pharmacy), doctor visits (OPD), or hospital stays (IPD), the important things to remember are the monthly limits, timely claim submission, and uploading correct documents. You’ve served the country! Now let this system serve you. A little care and attention can make the whole process work in your favor.
